Elon Musk-led petition to halt AI development divides tech community
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak were signatories on an open letter signed by more than 2,600 tech industry leaders and researchers. The open letter called for a temporary halt on any further artificial intelligence (AI) development. The petition shared concerns that AI with human-competitive intelligence can pose serious hazards to society and mankind. It urged all AI firms to "immediately cease" developing AI systems that are more potent than Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) for at least six months. GPT-4 is a multimodal large language model created by OpenAI and the fourth in its GPT series.

How AI is Changing the World with Smarter Decision Making
Harnessing the incredible potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for its invaluable impact on the human race is an incredibly powerful guiding vision. AI is part of everyday life, guiding us today. In this article, I am going to discuss how AI is fundamentally shaping smarter decisions that impact our world. By embracing AI as a national imperative and making AI solutions relevant and accessible to all, we can charge forward and change the way businesses all over the world make their most important decisions. Companies that harnessed the potential of AI were in a position during the pandemic to weather the storm and continue to thrive despite the pandemic's massive impact on consumer behavior.
The EU's Artificial Intelligence Act: A Pragmatic Approach - Techonomy
The European Union has introduced a proposal to regulate the development of AI, with the goal of protecting the rights and well-being of its citizens. The Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) is designed to address certain potentially risky, high-stakes use cases of AI, including biometric surveillance, bank lending, test scoring, criminal justice, and behavior manipulation techniques, among others. The goal of the AIA is to regulate the development of these applications of AI in a way that will foster increased trust in its adoption. Similar to the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the AIA law will apply to anyone selling or providing relevant services to EU citizens. GDPR spearheaded data privacy regulations across the United States and around the world.

C3.ai launches digital transformation institute
Tech company C3.ai has teamed up with an all-star cast of collaborators, including Microsoft and several prestigious educational institutions. Partnering with Princeton University, Berkley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and others, C3.ai has launched two new initiatives to develop research and innovation within the field of artificial intelligence (AI): C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute: Pooling the research assets of several leading institutions, this project will seek to drive the widespread adoption of AI in business, government and wider society. C3.ai DTI First Call for Research Proposals: Designed to create a dialogue between researchers, academics and concept developers, C3.ai is hoping to tackle a timely subject and hopefully accelerate the finding of a solution: the COVID-19 pandemic. Thomas M. Siebel, CEO, presented the projects as a unique opportunity to bring together the best minds from every aspect of the tech industry and unite their abilities for the greater good of society. "We have the opportunity through public-private partnership to change the course of a global pandemic […] I cannot imagine a more important use of AI," he stated.
Alexa, Alex, or Al?
Our tech world is fraught with troubling trends when it comes to gender inequality. A recent UN report "I'd blush if I could" warns that embodied AIs like the primarily female voice assistants can actually reinforce harmful gender stereotypes. Dag Kittlaus, who co-founded Siri before its acquisition by Apple, spoke out on Twitter against the accusation on Siri's sexism: It is important to acknowledge that the gender of Siri, unlike that of other voice assistants, was configurable early on. But the product's position becomes harder to define when you notice that Siri's response to the highly inappropriate comment "You're a slut" is in fact the title of the UN report: "I'd blush if I could." Therefore, in this article I'd like to discuss the social and cultural aspects of voice assistants, and specifically, why they are designed with gender, what ethical concerns this causes, and how we can fix this issue.
Call to Action to the Tech Community on New Machine Readable COVID-19 Dataset The White House
Today, researchers and leaders from the Allen Institute for AI, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), Microsoft, and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health released the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD-19) of scholarly literature about COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, and the Coronavirus group. Requested by The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the dataset represents the most extensive machine-readable Coronavirus literature collection available for data and text mining to date, with over 29,000 articles, more than 13,000 of which have full text. Now, The White House joins these institutions in issuing a call to action to the Nation's artificial intelligence experts to develop new text and data mining techniques that can help the science community answer high-priority scientific questions related to COVID-19. The collection was constructed via a unique collaboration between Microsoft, NLM, CZI, and the Allen Institute for AI, coordinated by Georgetown University. Microsoft's web-scale literature curation tools were used to identify and bring together worldwide scientific efforts and results, CZI provided access to pre-publication content, NLM provided access to literature content, and the Allen AI team transformed the content into machine-readable form, making the corpus ready for analysis and study.
